Webinar 5 Interactive Mapping and Geospatial Analysis in the Cloud Using Open-Source GIS

During the past decades, the Earth science community has witnessed an explosive growth in the volume of geospatial datasets resulting from the proliferation of open-access satellite data streams. The large volumes of open-access satellite data pose significant challenges to the Earth science community. Download and analysis of multi-decadal satellite images over large regions are impractical using desktop computing resources. In this presentation, I will introduce some open-source packages for interactive mapping and geospatial analysis in the cloud, such as leafmap, geemap, and whiteboxgui. Users can utilize the Python ecosystem of diverse libraries and tools to create interactive maps and perform large-scale geospatial analysis with minimal coding via a web browser. I will also provide some useful resources that can be adopted for research and teaching at the university level.
