Men, women, children: no one is safe. For Christian women, however, fate could be even crueler. Captured, dragged far from their homeland, they became human merchandise in the slave markets of Algiers, Tunis, or Constantinople. Some were destined for domestic servitude, others for harems, still others for torture and abuse we can barely imagine today. In this video, I will take you into a dark page in the history of the Mediterranean: the world of corsair raids, kidnappings, and the suffering inflicted on Christian women who ended up in the hands of Ottoman slavers. A harsh, but necessary, tale to better understand how the fear of those raids marked the lives of coastal populations for centuries.
