A gigantic relic of the European steel industry – abandoned, rusting, and now partially demolished. Where fires once burned day and night, heavy machinery churned, and molten metal was transported through the plant, an oppressive silence now reigns. The history of this vast industrial complex stretches back to the beginning of the 20th century. It was then that the first large production facilities were built here. In the following decades, the plant was continuously expanded and developed into one of the most important iron and steel production sites in the region. Raw materials were delivered via an extensive rail network and processed directly on site. Entire freight trains moved between the various sections of the plant. Iron ore, coke, and other materials were processed around the clock. Liquid pig iron flowed from the furnaces, which was then further processed into steel and prepared for industrial use. For decades, the plant was far more than just a factory. It was a world unto itself, made of steel, concrete, tracks, cranes, and colossal machinery. Thousands of people found work here. Entire families were connected to the plant for generations. The factory shaped not only the landscape but also the life and identity of an entire industrial region. The work was hard, loud, and dangerous. The heat was intense, and noise, dust, and the smell of coal, oil, and hot metal permeated the air. At the same time, the plant represented economic growth, technological progress, and a period when heavy industry was one of Europe's most important pillars. But starting in the 1970s, the slow decline began. The European steel industry came under increasing pressure. International competition, rising production costs, and economic changes led to more and more areas being scaled back or shut down completely. Despite various modernization efforts, the site's demise could not be permanently averted. One by one, the fires went out. In 2011, the last major production phase finally ended. Initially, many people still hoped that the shutdown might only be temporary and that the plant would one day be reopened. But the machines remained silent. What remained was a vast industrial wasteland. Halls, tracks, and technical facilities that were once in constant use suddenly stood empty. Wind and rain penetrated the buildings, metal began to rust, and nature slowly reclaimed parts of the site. Now, another phase has begun: demolition. More and more parts of this once-mighty steel giant are disappearing for good. During our visit, it was already clear that not everything of the former complex remained. Nevertheless, the remaining structures still conveyed an impression of the incredible scale of this place. We'll take you through the last remnants of this vanished industrial world and show you the plant from both the ground and the air. The drone footage, in particular, reveals just how vast this site once was and how forlorn the remaining structures now appear in the landscape. However, our exploration didn't go quite as smoothly as planned. In the middle of the site, we suddenly walked right into a BauWatch surveillance system. Shortly afterward, we had to assume that security was on patrol. We had no choice but to take cover and hide from the employees.
