[4K] 🇭🇺 Budapest Metro | All the Lines

Inaugurated in 1896, the Budapest metro was the second ever underground metro system to open in the world. Today it operates 4 lines over 40 km of track and moves around 382 million people a year. The newest line M4 opened in 2014 and is fully automated. It’s one of very few driverless metro lines in the world to not have platform screen doors. Rolling stock on the system comes from a variety of manufacturers including Alstom, Metrowagonmash, and Ganz which is a local company. M1 being the oldest line has the most unique rolling stock resembling some sort of mining or work vehicle in my opinion. Fares run on an honour system which means there are no fare gates or turnstiles at the stations and it’s common to run into a fare inspector. This facilitates fare integration with the rest of transit in Budapest since all tickets are valid for a certain amount of time on all modes rather than just what you spend riding one mode. I recommend taking the metro to anyone who finds themselves in the Hungarian capital since it’s a world class transit system and a UNESCO world heritage site at the same time (at least on line 1).
