Pray The Holy Rosary: Glorious Mysteries – Wednesday, July 15, 2026 | St. Bonaventure

Today we pray the Holy Rosary with the Glorious Mysteries on the Memorial of Saint Bonaventure, Bishop and Doctor of the Church — one of the greatest theologian-mystics in Catholic history, a man who believed that the highest wisdom was not found in argument but in love, and that the path to God ran not through the intellect alone but through the humble, burning heart. In the First Reading, God rebukes Assyria for its arrogance — the axe boasting against the one who wields it, the rod lifting itself above the hand that holds it (Isaiah 10:5–7, 13–16). No human power, no human wisdom, no empire built on pride will stand against the Lord of hosts. He allows instruments of judgment, but he is never replaced by them. In the Gospel, Jesus breaks into prayer in the middle of his ministry and praises the Father for the most unexpected reversal in all of history: "I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike" (Matthew 11:25–27). The Glorious Mysteries are the culmination of exactly that reversal — the resurrection that confounded the powerful, the ascension that exalted the humble, the Spirit poured out not on kings but on fishermen, the woman assumed into heaven who was once an unknown girl in Nazareth. God has always worked this way. He still does. These readings and this feast belong together completely. Saint Bonaventure was a brilliant mind who spent his life insisting that brilliance was not enough — that the soul reaches God through love more than logic, through poverty of spirit more than accumulated knowledge. Assyria fell because it forgot who held the axe. Bonaventure was great because he never forgot. As we pray the Glorious Mysteries today, we ask for that same childlike surrender — to know that what God has hidden from the proud, he reveals freely to those who come to him small.
