The "Overpass" Argument That Stops Atheist Academics in Their Tracks
In this highly academic worldview exchange, a university professor from the hard sciences calls into a presuppositionalist platform to debate the metaphysical underpinnings of historical inquiry. The caller, identifying as a historically uncommitted lifelong atheist moving toward a reluctant belief, discusses his application of Bayesian analysis to test the probability of historical anomalies, such as the account by Ammianus Marcellinus regarding the balls of fire that halted the reconstruction of the third temple in 363 AD. He introduces lesser-known second-century extra-biblical sources like Quadratus, who claimed that individuals miraculously healed by Jesus survived deep into the second century, creating a living overlapping tradition. The apologist pivots the discussion away from evidentialist frameworks like Gary Habermas’s Minimal Facts, forcing a presuppositional examination of how historical inquiry can exist at all.
