Jörg Haider: Der Erfinder des Rechtspopulismus (3/3)
On February 7, 2000, a new government was appointed in Austria amidst widespread public protest. The conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) entered into a coalition with Jörg Haider's Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ). After the Freedom Party achieved a resounding electoral victory, they returned to government after 17 years. But the man to whom the party owed its success in large part had to step down: Jörg Haider relinquished the chairmanship of the FPÖ and returned to Carinthia as governor. What no one could have foreseen at the time: This move would mark the beginning of the end for Jörg Haider. In the third and final episode of this miniseries, we reconstruct the downfall of the former FPÖ rising star. We examine his defection from the party, a banking scandal in Carinthia, and Haider's fatal accident. We also explore the legacy Jörg Haider leaves behind. In the podcast series "Inside Austria," SPIEGEL and the Austrian newspaper Der Standard jointly reconstruct cases, scandals, and political abysses in Austria. Editor's note: An earlier version of this podcast episode mistakenly stated that the Minister-President of Thuringia had traveled to meet with Vladimir Putin. It was actually the Minister-President of Saxony. We have corrected this in the podcast. Furthermore, the swearing-in of the black-blue coalition government took place on February 4, 2000, not February 7 as stated in the podcast.
