These are some of the demands from the "Austria First" petition, which the then-FPÖ leader Jörg Haider put out for signature in 1993. At a time when racism was on the rise in both Austria and Germany, and images of burning refugee shelters in Rostock-Lichtenhagen and Hoyerswerda were circulating around the world, Haider exploited the xenophobic atmosphere to mobilize voters.
