The headman's widow, the domineering and pious Gorpina, who never misses a single church service, has turned the life of her daughter-in-law Ulyana into hell. She constantly humiliates the girl in front of the neighbors, calling her a "waste flower" and "cursed by God," because in three years of marriage Ulyana has never been able to bear it. Gorpina constantly incites her son to beat his wife, and demands that he throw her out of the yard and take another, richer one.
