On the shores of Lake Bafa, at the foot of Mount Beşparmak and not far from modern-day Didim, the ancient Byzantine city of Heraclea once flourished. Today, only picturesque ruins remain, nestled within the Turkish village of Kapıkırı. During Byzantine times, this region, including the lake's islands and Mount Beşparmak, was home to Latros, one of the largest monastic centers of the era. At its height, it boasted 11 magnificent monasteries. Evidence of its former grandeur has survived here since ancient times: the ruins of an ancient theater, the temples of Athena and Endymion, thermal pools, fortress walls, and other structures. And in the mysterious caves of Mount Beşparmak, researchers have discovered unique rock carvings left by people as far back as the Neolithic era. These prehistoric images stretch along ancient mountain roads and springs of water gushing from the ground. I also found an interesting legend about the moon goddess Selene and the handsome youth Endymion. Captivated by his beauty, Selene begged Zeus to grant her beloved's cherished wish. The youth chose eternal youth, which could only be achieved by plunging into endless sleep.
