Evening Seascape Trailer
This is a trailer for a full length watercolour demonstration by Poppy Balser. The full video is available on her website, here: https://www.poppybalser.com/video/2907 About Poppy Poppy Balser is a Canadian painter who has always lived withing walking distance of the ocean, mostly on the shores of the Bay of Fundy. She developed an early connection with the seashore which has deepened as she studies the sea and its environs through her paintings. She treasures the wild portions of Nova Scotia's environment as a precious resource and seeks to highlight their beauty in her paintings. She paints outside often to keep her observations fresh and accurate. Her goal is to transfer the open air feeling of being outside in nature into her studio work. Balser began the serious pursuit of painting in watercolours in 2003. She has since followed a path of self directed study, choosing workshops by master painters from across the country. Over the last few years she has expanded her artistic practice to include oil painting. She has won multiple awards in both watercolour and oils. Her work focuses largely on marine themes. Poppy spends considerable time painting outdoors on location on the Bay of Fundy coast. She brings her plein air studies home and uses that accumulated experience when she paints in the studio. In this demo Poppy starts by choosing a scene with strong back-lighting. The evening sun throws a sharply defined shadow on the face of an approaching wave. To demonstrating the technical process of painting this scene she sticks closely to the original resource. This allows students to clearly connect the Poppy's decisions mades while painting to what they see in the resource photo. The scene in this demonstration is from the spot where Balser paints outside the most, Point Prim Park on the shores of the Bay of Fundy on Nova Scotia's west coast. This demonstration is a great opportunity to soak up her experience painting and studying on this spot.
