Karen Horney belongs to the second generation of psychoanalysts, the so-called neo-Freudians, whose main contribution is recognizing the fundamental importance of social factors, rather than biological ones, as Freud did. This is the basis for Horney's theory. Upon moving to the United States, Karen Horney noticed how vastly different European and American cultures were. Everything was different: people's behavior, the economic situation, and the mental disorders that arose. Thus, she first witnessed how cultural and social environments can influence the formation of an individual's personality. These observations led her to the conclusion that unique interpersonal relationship styles underlie personality disorders. And, of course, like any psychoanalyst, she focused primarily on childhood relationships.
