VESTERÅLEN ISLANDS: The Scenic Route of Norway's magic archipelago // EPS. 8 EXPEDITION NORTH

Westward from mainland Norway just north of the famous Lofoten Islands, there is a remote paradise with snow white beaches, cristal clear waters, dramatic, craggy mountains and breathtaking fjords: the archipelago of Vesterålen. I had one specific reason why I wanted to visit Vesterålen: Because of it's famous white beaches, that are said to be the most beautiful ones in Norway. So we left Lofoten Islands - not as planned with a ferry to Melbu, but over the island Hinnøya that is connected with the island Andøya of Vesterålen by road. Once I reached the Scenic Route Andøya I immediately fell in love with it's empty curvy roads stretching along the coastline, with it's rugged peaks and beautiful views. I collected blueberries and cloudberries on the way to regain the strenghts for a little hike: To the beach Høyvika from the little town Stave. There was not much time to lose after visiting Høyvika beach: There is a ferry from Andenes on Andøya to Gryllefjord on the island Senja - and it goes only once a day and has no prebooking! So the only chance to be able to get on the ferry is to be there early. After three hours of waiting we made it on the ferry! The ocean around the Vesterålen islands is one of the best places in the world to spot whales. If we were lucky?
