The story follows the Castro family, an influential family in early twentieth-century Rio de Janeiro, who seemingly followed an old rule and never buried their dead in the same cemetery twice. Starting in 1901, a series of deaths in the family begins to attract the attention of gravediggers, who notice the pattern of dispersed burials throughout the city. Then come episodes of nighttime carriages, funeral records disappearing from cemetery books, secret exhumations carried out by the family themselves, and decades later, a diary found in the mansion suggests that certain bodies could not remain still in the same place for very long...
