How to Survive Your First 5 Years as a First Responder
Nobody teaches you how to survive being a first responder. They teach you how to start an IV, splint a leg, and keep a straight face while someone’s life falls apart—but they don’t teach you what to do when those calls follow you home. In this "Unfiltered" episode, I’m sharing the 5 things I wish I knew during my first five years as a paramedic. Whether you are a new EMT, a veteran police officer, a nurse, or a firefighter, the "ugly machinery" of this job takes pieces of you that you didn't even know you were losing. We need to talk about how to protect what’s left. In this video, I break down: Lesson 1: Mental Health Prep. Why you need therapy before the job breaks you. Lesson 2: Trusted Advisors. Finding the 1-2 people you can be "naked" with (vulnerably). Lesson 3: The Identity Trap. Why you must stop making trauma your entire personality. Lesson 4: Dark Humor vs. Emotional Rot. Recognizing the moment your coping mechanism becomes dehumanizing. Lesson 5: Protecting Your Home. Practical (and physical) ways to keep the job's "blood and fragments" out of your front door. The average career for a paramedic in North America is only 4.5 years. Let's change that. Let’s build a resource in the comments for those following in our footsteps. This channel is where I give hard-earned commentary on real-world issues, modern culture, government policy, institutional overreach, and the narratives we’re all expected to politely swallow. I speak honestly, bluntly, and without much interest in scripting every word or sanding the edges off every thought. On this channel, you’ll find: • Social and cultural commentary • Political correctness, government overreach, bureaucratic identity politics, and institutional hypocrisy called out • Stories from life in the military and as a paramedic • Unfiltered breakdowns of current events and media narratives through the lens of a former frontline responder • Reflections on addiction, recovery, fatherhood, grief, resilience, relationships, personal growth, and the human condition • Thoughts on psychology, philosophy, literature, class, culture, dark humour, and the contradictions of human nature Subscribe for more deep dives: / @matthewjheneghan SUPPORT & PRODUCTS Grab my book *Trauma and Tea*: https://a.co/d/0dFsYJD2 Grab my book *A Medic’s Mind*: https://a.co/d/0iKtjWdt Grab my book *Woven in War*: https://a.co/d/0aU2LkLx CONNECT WITH ME Instagram: / matthewheneghan.unfiltered Facebook: / authormatthewheneghan #SocialCommentary #Culture #GovernmentPolicy #Veteran #Paramedic #AddictionRecovery #CanadianPolitics #CurrentEvents #MediaNarratives
