19 kids and counting sounds like a reality TV catchphrase (especially for TLC), but from a medical standpoint, it is a case study in extreme high-risk obstetrics. Today, we are taking a look at the pregnancy history of the Duggar family - Michelle Duggar in particular. As an OBGYN, looking at a history of 19 pregnancies introduces a massive list of serious clinical risks—from hyper-grand multiparity and severe postpartum hemorrhage to advanced maternal age complications like preeclampsia, which we saw play out with the birth of Josie at 25 weeks. I am not and never have been Michelle Duggar’s doctor, but she and the TLC show have put out enough information about her pregnancies and births for us to analyze. But beyond the maternal health risks, what happens to the children born into a family of this size? Today we are also discussing the "Buddy System" and parentification.
