Traumtour! Wanderung über den Hohen Ifen in Oberstdorf-Kleinwalsertal

We're finally hiking up the Hoher Ifen, a mountain that's long been on my bucket list. We start relaxed and save ourselves the first few meters of elevation by taking the Ifenbahn cable car to the mid-station. From here, our path initially leads toward the Gottesacker plateau. Things soon get really exciting, as the trail runs directly along the rock and offers cable safety ropes for additional support. The view already promises to be breathtaking, and the bright blue sky gives us hope for a perfect summit day. At first, we hike on easy gravel, but soon the path becomes steeper and rockier. The sun is blazing, so it's important to drink plenty of water and start as early as possible. The Gottesacker plateau impresses us with its unique karst landscape. Like a giant sponge, the rock is crisscrossed with cracks and underground channels. Up here, it feels like another world. We stay on the marked path and enjoy the tranquility of this protected natural area. After the first sections of wire rope, which require surefootedness, the climb becomes more challenging. We scramble over slippery rocks, taking each step with care. The path winds ever closer to the steep rock faces, and we feel the summit calling. Finally, the striking mountain ridge appears before us. From here, the path continues almost straight up the rocky ridge until we finally reach the summit cross at 2230 meters. Once at the top, a panorama opens up that rewards all our efforts. We gaze far across the Allgäu, into the Kleinwalsertal valley, and across into Switzerland with its snow-capped peaks. Towards Vorarlberg, we see the mighty Grosser Widderstein, which we already circumnavigated on a magnificent hike. The feeling up here is indescribable, especially when you dare to take the vertical view, which is almost a little vertigo-inducing. For the return journey, we choose a varied circular route that leads us to a picturesque mountain lake. Full concentration is also required downhill, as the path is steep and slippery in places. As long as it stays dry, the descent is manageable. A particularly beautiful section invites you to simply lift your head and enjoy the panorama once more in peace. The nature around us is silent, accompanied only by the chirping of crickets. After a while, we reach the first hut, where we could fortify ourselves with cool drinks and fresh milk, but we continue hiking, tempted by the famous Kaiserschmarrn (sweet pancakes) at the next alpine pasture. And indeed: A huge portion awaits us at the Schwarzwasserhütte, which we truly deserve after this hike. For me, this Kaiserschmarrn is definitely one of the best I've ever eaten.
