They COULDN'T BELIEVE This Overgrown Backyard Was BACK TO LIFE
A family who had recently moved into a house asked me for help; they couldn’t manage the work in their overgrown yard on their own, as it required not only experience but also the right tools and equipment. After discussing everything over the phone, I arrived at the appointed time. The owners greeted me warmly and explained that they had moved in very recently; while they were able to handle the home repairs themselves, they were at a loss when it came to the yard work. They initially wanted to remove two hedges in the front yard and on the side of the house to put up a fence, but since this couldn’t be done until September due to bird nesting, they asked me to trim the hedges and remove the bushes in the path to the backyard, with a special focus on clearing the backyard itself, since everything there was overgrown and they wanted to have a cozy yard for the summer. After assessing the scope of the work, I planned to complete it over the course of several days, since there was a lot of work in the backyard and I also needed to cut down several tree trunks and chip them, so I definitely wouldn’t have been able to handle it all in a single day. I started by trimming the hedge; I also trimmed a bush and a spherical tree near the house. After that, I immediately gathered up all the clippings, because even though it was a sunny day, it was still windy, and the clippings could have blown all over the street. Then I cut the weeds along the curbs; I also had to first blow away and then sweep up the small gravel that was everywhere, since while working with the trimmer, the stones could have injured someone or damaged someone else’s property. After that, I mowed the thick grass with the lawn mower, first without the grass catcher to make it easier to mow, then collected all the cut grass into a bag and mowed again with the grass catcher. After that, I used a shovel to trim the edges of the lawn, but even the shovel couldn’t hold up and a screw broke off; however, I immediately screwed in a new one and continued working. After a few hours of work, I decided to take a short break, since the owners had left me a bag with cold drinks and snacks. After the break, I cleared some soil near the front gate, which was hard to open. Next, I removed the shrubs along the house, leaving only a few flower bushes, then loaded everything into the trailer and drove off to unload it. Later, I returned with a stump grinder. First, I cleared the rocks near the cut tree trunks and moved them aside; then I cut the tree trunks with a chainsaw; finally, I ground the stumps down to about 20 cm below the level of the lawn. I returned the next day; the weather was cloudy but still warm. I immediately moved all the wood into the trailer, spread out a tarp, and dumped the rocks on it, since I had to separate the waste at the dump. I mowed a small patch behind the grill with a trimmer that I had forgotten about earlier, then moved to the backyard and immediately started removing the old, dried-up ivy from the picket fence, which I thought was about to fall down. I also cleared away all the clippings near the decorative pond and cut down the tall grass, then gathered everything up and carried it to the trailer; using a wheelbarrow, I also moved the soil that had been sitting on the tarp—probably for quite some time—into the trailer. Next, I used a trimmer to cut down all the weeds and grass, then blew away and collected all the debris. Finally, I removed the small tree in the center, since it was just a common weed. It took me two full days and two full trailer loads to complete this work. Since the owners still wanted to remove these hedges, I promised that I would return in the fall and do the job.
