On This Day 1870: Charles Dickens Died | The Voice of Victorian England - Poetry Changes Lives
Welcome - On this day in 1870, the great English novelist Charles Dickens died. Dickens was one of the most popular writers of the Victorian age and remains beloved around the world today. His novels, including A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and David Copperfield, combined unforgettable storytelling with compassion for the poor and criticism of social injustice. His works first appeared as serials in magazines, creating suspense and excitement among readers on both sides of the Atlantic. So eagerly awaited were his stories that crowds reportedly gathered at New York docks asking arriving ships whether “Little Nell” was still alive. Dickens never forgot his own painful childhood experiences of poverty and factory work while his father was imprisoned for debt. These hardships gave his writing its humanity, emotional depth, and enduring social conscience. Today's poem, Weary In Well-Doing by Christina Rossetti, reflects the exhaustion, perseverance, faith, and inner struggle familiar to many hardworking people. Together, Dickens and Rossetti remind us that effort, purpose, and compassion matter deeply. ✨ Today's reflection: Doing our best is not simply about achievement. It is about dignity, self-respect, purpose, and becoming the person we are meant to be. 📖 Poetry Changes Lives brings together poetry, history, and a thought for the day.
