Breast Reduction: Breastfeeding After Surgery
Breast Reduction: Breastfeeding After Surgery | Aesthetic Surgical Images One of the questions I'm frequently asked by patients who are considering a breast reduction is am I going to be able to breast-feed after that. It's especially a question in younger patients who are looking forward to their reproductive years. Breast-feeding is oftentimes a concern with that. First off, it depends on your own anatomy on whether or not you'd be able to breast-feed in the first place. People undergoing a breast reduction obviously have a lot of breast tissue but that still doesn't mean it always functions adequately. If you take ten people off the street who've never had a child and never had any surgery on their breast, have a pregnancy and try to breast-feed, at least one or two of them probably won't be able to; either due to nipple inversion or simply an inability to produce an adequate amount of milk. What we do surgically can interfere somewhat though. How breast-feeding works is the glandular part of the breast sends the milk up through the ducts up to the nipple area and as long as that entire scheme is in tact there, usually it's going to function. When we do a breast reduction, we do make some incisions deeply into the breast tissue so we can remove a portion of the tissue and then we have to rearrange things so it looks like a breast again. In that process, some of the glandular part is detached from the nipple. There's no way around that. The core portion of tissue that we leave behind is that that's underneath the nipple and still will be able to produce milk. Just as a general guideline, I'd say that one out of ten generally can't produce enough milk to breast-feed. After the surgery, it may be two or three but it's not everyone. There's still quite a few people who can and if you're suffering enough to really want a breast reduction, it's probably a good thing functionally to do before you have kids so you can keep up with them when they come.
