Vicuna & Guanaco - Two Peaks in a Day | Coquihalla, B.C. | Hiking
Vicuna and Guanaco Peaks are located in Coquihalla, British Columbia. Both peaks offer 360° views of surrounding granite summits. The prominent ones are the Steinbok and Ibex peaks of the Anderson river group, Zum peak, Yak, Needle and Coquihalla Mountain. Access to the trailhead is via the Upper Coldwater FSR which is around 6 km from the Zum Peak parking lot. The road is known for its overgrown trees and bushes, so be forewarned of possible "B.C. pinstripping". It is also rough on certain areas, so a 4x4 or high clearance vehicle is recommended. We drove 4 km from the Zum Peak parking lot and hiked the remaining 2 km to the trailhead. Both peaks share the same trailhead and later branches off after 3.5 km (from the trailhead). The hike starts off on a steep forest with some deadfalls and muddy area, then later climbs up to a boulder field with the famous natural staircase. Then climbs through the meadows and opens up to another boulder field until it reaches the col. To the hiker's left is Vicuna peak and towards right is Guanaco peak. The hike to Vicuna is technical and involves some class 3 - 4 scrambling with chain and rope assists towards the end. The hike to Guanaco involves an easy scramble. Statistics (including the 2 km we hiked before the trailhead): To Vicuna: Distance: 11.6 km round trip Elevation Gain: 1,184 m. Highest point: 2,126 m. To Guanaco: Distance: 11.8 km round trip Elevation Gain: 912 m. Highest point: 2,127 m.
