On 7 October 2001, less than a month after the September 11 attacks, a US-led coalition launched Operation Enduring Freedom, beginning military operations against the Taliban government and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. With Afghanistan landlocked, the campaign relied on a combination of cruise missile strikes and aircraft operating from distant land bases and carrier groups at sea, marking the start of what would become America's longest war.
