Nordend - 4609 mt - Via normale da Rotenboden (Zermatt - CH) 4K

The second-highest peak of Monte Rosa and the only one yet to be climbed in this beautiful mountain range on the Italian-Swiss border: the Nordend! In this video, in addition to showing you the climb, I'll also briefly explain the transportation logistics to reach this fantastic peak. I should point out that it's definitely not cheap, as the trains to Zermatt and Rotenboden alone cost €135 each, as does the Monte Rosa Hut, which costs about €100 per person for half board. Parking in Tasch costs about €30 per day, and all the additional expenses, including car, tunnel, highway, food, etc., etc. I estimate I spent about €350 for this trip! With this in mind, you drive to Tasch, where you park in the large paid parking lot. You take the train to Zermatt and then to Rotenboden, and then you set off on the trail, which is initially very easy, then becomes more rugged, leading to the Monterosahutte Refuge. We opted for the old trail that descends to the bottom of the glacier, alternating between a few short, secured sections, some rough scree, and the actual glacier at the bottom of the valley, before climbing back up to the refuge. The refuge, although expensive, is very beautiful and offers a variety of amenities, although they tend to overcrowd it in my opinion... We left the refuge at 3:00 a.m. to ascend the short moraine and immediately set foot on the glacier at 3,000 meters. From there, you'll continue entirely along the glacier to the summit; you need to be fit! The ascent route is long, quite steep, and strenuous. Before the Silbersattel, there are some enormous chasms that we were fortunate enough to find closed and easily passable. In dry years, these open up, making the passage almost impassable. Once you reach the col between the Dufour and Nordend passes, you follow the ridge, sometimes sharp, until you reach the final, exposed but not difficult, mixed section. The summit is truly sharp, and the view is incredible! The descent is endless, faithfully following the entire ascent route. Mountaineering Difficulty: PD+ Required Equipment: Helmet, harness, rope and equipment for safe progress on the glacier, crampons, and ice axe. For the route, find me on Strava or Garmin (Fabio Mochettaz). Total Trip: approximately 27 km round trip and 2,800 meters of elevation gain (including all the ascents). Enjoy!
