He Knew He'd Raise Lazarus in Minutes, So Why Did Jesus Weep? (The Greek Changes Everything)

Jesus wept. It's the shortest verse in the Bible — two words. And it's almost always read completely wrong. Because Jesus was standing minutes away from raising Lazarus from the dead. He knew the tomb was about to be empty. So why is He crying? The answer is hidden in a Greek word most English Bibles are too polite to translate honestly — a word that doesn't describe sadness at all. It describes a man about to go to war. Everywhere else, it means anger and indignation. Jesus didn't walk up to that tomb merely sad — He walked up to it ANGRY. ✦ DAKRYO (John 11:35) — "Jesus wept." A quiet shedding of tears, the ONLY time this word appears in the New Testament — completely different from the loud wailing (klaio) of the crowd. ✦ FURY + TEARS at the same tomb — what most sermons miss: Jesus is both burning with rage and silently weeping. Why? The answer: He's not angry at the people — He's angry at DEATH itself, the great intruder, the last enemy. And the tears prove the anger is the anger of LOVE. He wept even though He knew the ending — which means your tears are not a failure of faith. And the part that makes it almost too big to hold: raising Lazarus was the "final straw" that set Jesus's own death in motion. Lazarus walked out still wearing his grave clothes — because he'd die again.
