The Hebrew Word for "Helper" Is a Military Term, and It Changes Everything About Women
When God created the woman in Genesis 2, He called her a "helper." For most of us that word lands soft and small - an assistant, a sidekick, the one in the background. People have built entire arguments about a woman's worth on that one English word. But the Hebrew underneath "help" isn't soft at all. It's a word soaked in strength, rescue, and the language of the battlefield. The word is EZER. And the same exact word God uses for the woman, He uses 16 other times for one other person: Himself - the warrior God who shows up with a sword and a shield to rescue His people. In this video: EZER appears 21 times in the Hebrew Bible: 2 for the woman, 3 for military allies, and 16 for GOD Himself - Robert Alter on why "help" is "too weak" - ezer means "active intervention, especially in military contexts" ELIEZER - Moses' son, "my God is my ezer," named because God "delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh" - Psalm 33: "our help and our shield." Psalm 121: "my help comes from the LORD, maker of heaven and earth" KENEGDO - the other half: not a junior assistant, but an equal counterpart standing face to face - Why being a "helper" is actually one of the most God-like things a person can be An honest note: the word ezer by itself doesn't settle every debate about the roles of men and women - sincere, godly Christians land in different places on those questions, and one Hebrew noun won't end a 2,000-year conversation. But it does decisively kill one idea: that "helper" means lesser, weak, or auxiliary. That reading simply isn't in the Hebrew - because the same word describes God, and God is no one's junior assistant.
