Why Movement Matters In Midlife
Why can movement suddenly feel harder in midlife – and what actually helps? Former GP, runner and menopause expert Dr Juliet McGrattan joins Dr Lee David to explore how movement changes during midlife, why exercise can feel more difficult in perimenopause and menopause, and how to build a more realistic and supportive relationship with movement. Many women notice that exercise feels different during midlife. Energy may feel less predictable. Recovery can take longer. Aches and pains seem to appear more easily. Activities that once felt straightforward may suddenly feel harder. For others, midlife becomes a point of reflection – a growing awareness of wanting to protect future health, stay independent and feel physically stronger, but uncertainty about where to start. In this conversation, Lee and Juliet explore why movement matters so much during midlife – not only for physical health, but also for mood, stress, confidence and social connection. They discuss how exercise can easily become another pressure, why running does not need to be competitive and how slowing down may sometimes help us enjoy movement more. The episode also explores strength training, mobility, balance and healthy ageing, alongside practical ways to approach movement without guilt, perfectionism or comparison. Whether you already exercise, feel frustrated that movement has become harder or are wondering how to get started, this conversation offers a thoughtful and realistic way to think about moving your body in midlife.
