Palagianello: Terra delle Gravine e delle Cave di Tufo - 4k Cinematic Aerial View
Palagianello is a charming village located in the province of Taranto, Apulia. Immersed in a fascinating natural landscape, this town is distinguished by its ‘gravine’, deep karst gorges that cut through the territory, creating scenery of rare beauty. The Gravina of Palagianello, with its caves and rock settlements, bears witness to a millennial history, where wild nature mingles with traces of ancient civilisations. The video shows, using exclusively aerial footage, the main points of interest in the town and its territory: The Gravina The Gravina (Canyon) of Palagianello is one of the most fascinating natural wonders of Apulia, a karstic canyon that runs through the territory of the village, creating a landscape of great visual and historical impact. This ravine, like many others in the region, is a deep fissure in the ground, formed by the erosion of water over thousands of years on limestone rocks, which has created a unique environment rich in biodiversity. The Gravina of Palagianello is not only a masterpiece of nature, but also a site of enormous historical and archaeological significance. Its steep walls are home to numerous caves, many of which have been inhabited since prehistoric times. Ponte di Santo Stefano The Santo Stefano Bridge, erected in 1930, is an impressive piece of architecture that played a crucial role in the railway connection between Bari and Taranto. Replacing an old metal bridge from 1868, now unsuitable to support the weight of modern locomotives, the new bridge, built of masonry and resting on solid concrete piers lined with stone, allowed trains to easily cross the picturesque ravine and serve the heart of the town until 2008. In that year, a new railway line was opened further south, marking the end of an era. As a reminder of that past, a historic steam locomotive, built in Milan in 1904, was placed near the old railway line, recalling the link between the bridge and the region's railway transport history. Today, the Ponte di Santo Stefano is an integral part of a fascinating cycle and footpath linking Palagianello to Castellaneta, offering visitors a unique experience of history and nature. As you walk along it, you can enjoy an extraordinary view of the ravine, a panorama that enchants and tells stories of times gone by. Stella Caracciolo Castle The castle has a massive quadrangular plan with a large central courtyard and four towers at the outer corners. One of the most fascinating features of the castle is its panoramic position, which offers an extraordinary view of the Gravina di Palagianello and the surrounding landscape. From here, it is possible to admire the beauty of the Apulian countryside, with its olive groves, vineyards and cultivated fields, stretching as far as the eye can see. The Churches At the foot of the castle stands the Mother Church of St Peter the Apostle, a building in local stone, characterised by square, symmetrical lines and well integrated into the context of the town. More secluded from the town centre, at the edge of the ravine and dug into the tuff, stands the charming Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, patron saint of the town. The Tuff Quarries The second part of the video is entirely dedicated to the tuff quarries, where stone quarrying in past years has created monumental landscapes that, particularly at sunset, are tinged with fascinating colours. 0:00 La Gravina 0:25 Santo Stefano Bridge 0:41 Castle Stella Caracciolo 1:00 The Churches 1:15 The Tuff Quarries
