Tra le rovine di San Bruzio, antico monastero della Maremma The Saint Bruzio Monastery in Magliano in Toscana T he fascinating and unexplored side of Tuscany: the Saint Bruzio Monastery (...) A mystical and mysterious place Perhaps it is because of its isolated location, or the charm it inspires, or because I decided to visit it alone, but this tiny building attracts and intrigues at the same time. The road to the Monastery is evocative. It is a white dirt road gaining access to untouched nature. The several centuries-old olive trees surrounding the remains of San Bruzio, seem to be guarding and protecting this mystical place. It involuntarily induces to silence. The feeling of being in a special place enveloped in an aura of mystery is palpable. The combination of sensations overwhelming those who visit the site, seems to be common to many. Over time, in fact, the monastery has always generated much interest, activating the most fervent fantasies of men. All this has contributed to the creation of legendary stories and popular beliefs, which are hidden and combined with the original history of the place. Sometimes the tales refer to events probably happened, but over the centuries they have taken on a fantastical evolution, perhaps because they have been transmitted, exaggerating the events by the storytellers. The oneiric and secret side of the Monastery of San Bruzio One of the many sayings surviving to the present day is that San Bruzio, was the place where the nuns went in great secret to give birth to illegitimate children, the result of relations or violence suffered. Given its isolated location, it is said the Monastery was the ideal place to give birth to children. No one would ever hear their screaming induced labour pains. Some of these children were cared for by families who would later adopt them, guaranteeing to keep their conception a secret. Others, on the other hand, suffered the thoughtless choice of a fate already sadly marked out. The new-born were in fact abandoned at birth in the Abbey. It is said that still today, the desperate cries of newborn babies, can be heard coming from the walls of the monastery. Some even claim they saw their faces materialize from the walls. The rendez-vous with Destiny Probably what makes the Abbey of San Bruzio a particularly mysterious and contemplative place, perhaps more than all the previous stories, is the legend concerning a very difficult subject. It refers to an existential enigma generating many questions from the mists of time, feared but at the same time yearned for. The rendez-vous with our own Destiny. According to the tradition, the Destiny would show itself at this specific location only to the most deserving souls who keep only a pure heart. This legend describes the story of a young girl who was asked by Destiny to save her dying lover. The young girl’s soulful request was granted, because it was made with a pure heart. The maiden was so grateful for the grace received that she offered St. Bruzio her own life in exchange for that of her lover, who was saved. This was the price to be paid for overturning the fate of the beloved, because destiny is by divine law predetermined and immutable. It is said that on certain particular nights, a shadow can be discerned hovering within the walls of the monastery. It is the young man who once escaped death, who is in desperate remorse and invokes Destiny to return his beloved to him. Having, however, made the maiden suffer, he has inexorably damaged the young girl’s heart, and as legend has it, the San Bruzio’s Destiny listens to and hears only the pure in heart.
