In 1984, the water in "Sawara-ike" (Sawara Pond)—located halfway up Mt. Amari in Nirasaki City, Yamanashi Prefecture—suddenly dried up. The cause remained unknown. An old sword was discovered embedded in the center of the dried-up pond. There were no records indicating that a sword had been driven into the pond, nor were there any local oral traditions regarding it; thus, the questions of when, by whom, and for what purpose it had been placed there remained a mystery. A legend exists surrounding the pond about an old woman with horns who committed suicide by drowning herself there, only to reappear later as a red ox. In 1994, a TBS production team searched the pond and discovered an iron sword. The sword measured approximately 40 centimeters in length and 8 centimeters in width; its tip was badly decayed, and the blade was covered in rust, giving it a reddish-brown appearance.
