September 21, 1996, was a beautiful day, the last of the summer. Danielle decided to go for a walk along a path not far from her home. Walking surrounded by nature was one of her favorite things. Her mother, Sheryl, asked her to be home by 2:00 PM, as some friends were coming to visit that afternoon. To help her keep track of time, she lent her her wristwatch. She also let her use the car. Danielle was only fifteen and, officially, couldn't yet drive without an adult. Her parents, however, sometimes allowed her to. The girl grabbed a bottle of water, said goodbye to her mother, and left around 11:30 AM, promising to be back on time. But when 2:30 PM rolled around and Danielle still hadn't returned, Sheryl began to worry. It wasn't like her to be late. Thinking she'd simply lost track of time, she decided to head down the trail to look for her and then head home together. As soon as she reached the parking lot, she noticed their white pickup truck, parked with its doors wide open. There was no sign of the fifteen-year-old, however. Sheryl walked down the trail toward the river. And a few meters away, she found her daughter's car keys and bottle of water on the ground. At that point, her anxiety quickly mounted. Seeing those objects scattered on the ground, in the silence of the trail, raised an alarm that was impossible to ignore. The woman began to scream her daughter's name, looking around in the hope of spotting her among the trees or along the river. Deep down, Sheryl tried to convince herself that Danielle might have been hurt, perhaps after a fall, or that she simply needed help.
