IMPROVISING ON RHYTHM CHANGES

Aside from the blues, the chord progression for I Got Rhythm is used as a framework for jazz improvisation more than any other. Being able to improvise on rhythm changes is an essential skill for the aspiring improviser because they contain harmonic elements that are found in many other tunes, all of which have been discussed in other videos in this series. This episode delves into the basic rhythm changes chord progression and some of the variations that jazz musicians utilize, and includes demonstrations of melodic approaches ranging from blues and pentatonic scales to full chromatic bop-style improvisation.
