Música, política e religião – Ocupação Elomar (2015)

Maria Helena Carrasqueira, a Portuguese language and literature professor, discusses the multiple meanings and possible interpretations of Elomar's songs. For her, the artist's music is seductive, appealing to people with diverse political and social backgrounds. To explain her perspective, she discusses "O Peão na Amarração" (The Peon in the Anchorage) – a song by Elomar performed by Dércio Marques at the 1st Festival of New Brazilian Popular Music, MPB 80 – and the context of the time: military dictatorship and popular strikes. Testimonial recorded for the Elomar Occupation, in June 2015, in São Paulo, SP. The 25th edition of the Itaú Cultural Occupation program invites the public to enter a space of contemplation and be carried away by the enchantments of the deep sertão. The exhibition is free and open from July 18 to August 23, 2015.
