Boundless Love (John Prine) • The Rainbow Connection (Paul Williams & Kenneth Ascher)
Happy Birthday, John Prine! For: John, Jacques, and Leon. Thinking of you… thank you for filling our hearts with joy and giving us permission to both laugh until we cry and cry until we laugh. 🦋♥️🦋 I must say, October started off pretty heavy this time around… my 15-year-old Italian Greyhound, Jacques, passed away in the early hours of October first. We’ve been through so much together, and my heart is sore, to say the least. He had a good run, and I’m grateful for every moment we shared. His body was real tired, and I like to think he’s running around in a golden meadow somewhere now, with all of his friends. I keep saying I feel happy for him, and sad for me. 2025 has been a hard year for pets around here — my cat, Leon, also passed suddenly a few months ago. (Many of you might remember him from our version of John Prine’s Summer’s End.) It really hurts to say goodbye… but I wouldn’t take any of it back. The love they gave — and the love that grew in me because of them — I get to keep. And when I think about it, I’ve gained so much more than I’ve lost... I’m better for loving them. On John Prine’s birthday (10/10), hoping to find a quiet spot, I drove up a canyon aimlessly and stopped at a random pull-off I’d never been to before, grabbed my guitar, and started walking up. I don’t know how I got so lucky… It’s not hard to find beauty here in Utah, but it is a challenge to find a place that’s accessable, beautiful and human-less. I ended up spending a good amount of time here — just singing to the wind, dragonflies, and ladybugs. I knew I wanted to play something for John’s birthday, but I can’t really tell you why I ended up with these two songs in particular. Ever since Jacques passed, they’ve both been playing on repeat in my head. I guess I took it as a sign. What better way to remember and celebrate love, kindness, forgiveness, compassion, and connection — all the things John Prine embodied, and all that our pet-people radiated — than by singing their songs as the sun goes off to sleep? … I hadn’t thought of it that way until writing this now, but I kinda like the idea of singing lullabies to the sun. After all the beautiful sunsets The Sun has given me, I feel bad that I haven’t been giving anything back… I think I’m going to work on that. 🌞💛🌈 I love you. Thank you for being here — wherever and whenever you may be. — Kelli x Recorded in Emigration Canyon (Utah): near Last Camp Site Monument With: Mics: @audigolabs #audigolabs #madewithaudigo Using: iphone16Pro @Apple #iphone16pro #apple @gibsonguitar #gibsonguitars #j45 #johnprine #kermitthefrog #boundlesslove #rainbowconnection #jimhenson #paulwilliams #singersongwriter #utah #acoustic #cover #femaleversion #connection #lovesong #inmemory #happybirthday #october2025 #love
