SummerStrong 19: Jonathan Hayes & Chris Gray

Jonathan Hayes is a longtime football leader whose impact spans playing, coaching, and now athletic direction. A former NFL tight end, Hayes played 12 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers after being a second‐round pick out of the University of Iowa. He then transitioned to coaching, spending 16 years as the Cincinnati Bengals’ tight ends coach, helping develop Pro Bowl talent and contribute to multiple playoff runs. Hayes later served as head coach and general manager of the St. Louis BattleHawks in the XFL and was offensive coordinator for the 2023 XFL champion Arlington Renegades. Today he leads athletic programs as the athletic director at Moeller High School, where he focuses on building culture, leadership, and performance for student‐athletes. Chris Gray is the Director of Strength and Conditioning at Archbishop Moeller High School, bringing extensive experience in athlete development, performance strategy, and strength culture. Prior to Moeller, Gray served as associate athletic director and head strength coach at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where he helped grow the strength and conditioning program, supported over 700 student‐athletes, and coached more than 50 All‐Americans across multiple sports. Gray’s background includes performance leadership roles at Ignition Athletic Performance Group supporting professional and collegiate training programs—and serving as assistant director of strength and conditioning at the University of Cincinnati. He holds a master’s degree in physical education and certifications in strength and conditioning and sports nutrition.
