Powerful back-to-back earthquakes strike Venezuela | BBC News

Two major earthquakes shook the Venezuelan capital of Caracas seconds apart on Wednesday evening. The first 7.2-magnitude quake was centred in the state of Carabobo, some 20km from the capital, Caracas. It was followed by a stronger earthquake just 39 seconds later, with that one registering a 7.5 magnitude, the US Geological Survey says. Buildings have collapsed as residents poured out into the streets, and the interior minister has asked people to leave their homes. It is still unclear how many casualties there have been and what the extent of the damage will be.
