What is 'Householder' Zen Practice? with John Daishō Corso-Esquivel

John Daisho corso-Esquivel is an art historian and associate professor at Davidson College. His work explores how emotion and feeling what scholars call "affect"— shape the political meaning of contemporary art, particularly the work of women, artists of color, and LGBTQ+ artists. His first book, Feminist Subjectivities in Fiber Art and Craft: Shadows of Affect, was published in 2019. John's thinking about emotion in art is deeply influenced by his daily Zen practice. He received the name "Great Laughter" from Shinge Sherry Chayat Roshi when he took the precepts at the Zen Center of Syracuse Hoen-ji in 2006. He and his husband relocated to Davidson from metropolitan Detroit in 2021.
