Bhubaneswar, with a population of 1,226,000, is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Odisha. Located in the Khordha district, Bhubaneswar is nicknamed the "City of Temples" due to the numerous temples located there. Today, the city is a hub for sports, tourism, and information technology in the country. While the modern city of Bhubaneswar was officially established in 1948, the history of the areas in and around the city dates back to the 1st century BC. A melting pot of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain heritage, the city contains numerous Kalingan temples, most of which date from the 6th to the 13th centuries AD. Together with Puri and Konark, it forms the "Swarna Tribhuja" (literally, "Golden Triangle"), one of the most visited places in Eastern India. Puri is a small town located 60 km from Bhubaneswar. This town is a very important pilgrimage center for Hindus. The Jagannath Temple is very sacred, and hundreds of thousands of people come to visit. The Yath Rathra Festival, held annually in July, is another important aspect of Puri's significance.
