Is This the Most Famous Town You've Never Heard Of?!
One of the Bee Gees is buried in this quiet Oxfordshire market town. The other one has a memorial stone in the same churchyard. Most people drive straight through it without stopping. Thame is a beautiful market town in the Chiltern foothills, about 13 miles east of Oxford. On the surface, it looks like an extraordinarily ordinary English High Street. Look closer, and almost nothing about it is ordinary. We begin at the Thame Memorial Garden, then walk the length of the High Street — independent shops, a Town Hall that still actually functions as a town hall and sits at the centre of the street the way town halls were always supposed too! Then past one of the country's finest independent bookshops, The Book House. Well worth a visit. Then it's into the churchyard of St Mary's — where you can find the Robin Gibb grave, who died in 2012, is buried, and where a memorial stone stands for his younger brother Andy, who spent his final days at Robin's home here in Thame before his death in 1988 aged just 30. Then, back on the High Street, we find the James Figg Inn. The pub is named after a man born in Thame in 1684, who made his headquarters at what was then the Greyhound Inn on Cornmarket before heading to London to become the first recognised bare-knuckle Champion of England. His challenge, shouted around the streets of early 18th-century London: "Here I am, Jemmy Figg from Thame — I will fight any man in England." He eventually based himself in Marylebone, where he opened his boxing academy — and where we've walked before. Two more things about Thame. Coldcut — Jonathan More and Matt Black, who pioneered music sampling in the 1980s and went on to found Ninja Tune — grew up here. And Gavin Free and Daniel Gruchy, better known to 15 million YouTube subscribers as the Slo Mo Guys, are from here too. It's that kind of town. 🗺️ Route 00:00 Thame Memorial Garden 02:20 The High Street — Independent Shops 05:18 Thame Town Hall 08:45 The Book House — Independent Bookshop 11:26 St Mary's Church 13:25 Robin Gibb & Andy Gibb Memorial 15:00 The James Figg Inn 🎙️ Still Walking brings you calm, narrated walks through towns and everyday places — at an unhurried pace, noticing small details and the character of each place as it unfolds. 🔔 Subscribe for more quiet walks: 📍 See our Playlist — English Market Towns 📍 Our Marylebone Walk (where James Figg eventually based himself): • Is This Really Central London? | Exploring...
