Building a Fish Wheel for Our Village | Remote Alaska

The families in the small village we call home have depended on the salmon returning to this river for generations. For years, there was a community fish wheel owned by an old-timer that everyone relied on—until he passed away a few years ago. Ever since, people in the community have hoped to build another one. A few weeks ago, we thought we had lost our own fish wheel for good. So we got to work building a replacement. Then, with the help of some incredible neighbors, we managed to recover the original just as the new one was finished. Instead of ending up with one wheel, we suddenly had two—and that gave us an idea. We decided to build out the new wheel for the community around us, so local families would once again have a place to harvest salmon close to home. With a little luck, we'll have it in the river and fishing by the end of the week, just in time for the late July salmon run!
