Norfolk Southern and CSX Trains in Downtown Atlanta, Georgia

A friend and I set out early on December 14, 2023 in order to capture railroad action in the Atlanta, Georgia area with the specific target of shooting some trains in downtown. Activity was decent despite zero unit trains showing up, with only the regularly scheduled autorack, intermodal, and manifest trains making appearances. Motive power was about what you would expect these days, with the home road black and white ponies making up the majority of units on display. A leased Wells Fargo ex-BNSF SD70MAC was seen along with a couple UP motors, but that was about it. Only one CSX train ran south via East Point pretty much all day, though that is unfortunately not surprising. Through downtown, CSX utilizes trackage rights on the NS Griffin District to the tune of roughly 4-6 trains per day. That number used to be much higher before the closing of Tilford Yard and Hulsey Yard, the intermodal ramp in downtown.
