Kirchzarten: Die Drehleier - ein fast vergessenes Instrument?

Hurdy-gurdy, organistrum, sinfonia – in its over 1000-year history, the hurdy-gurdy, known by various names since the Middle Ages, has proven itself to be an exceptionally versatile instrument, captivating nobility and clergy in Europe as well as the common peasantry with its unique sound. Sebastian Hilsmann from Kirchzarten near Freiburg in southern Baden is one of the last instrument makers in Germany who still master the ancient craft of hurdy-gurdy making. In his workshop, he meticulously handcrafts one or two unique instruments each month. Our freelance editor, Fabian Weller, visited the 35-year-old and had him explain the intricacies of this complex instrument. ++Note for international viewers+++ English and German subtitles are available for this video.
