July 12-13, 2025. I climbed Okuhotakadake and Gendarme in the Northern Alps for two days and one night. I had been wanting to climb Gendarme for 10 years. Finally, it was time to challenge myself. There are many parking lots around Shinhotaka Onsen, from paid to free. In particular, the free "Shinhotaka 3rd Parking Lot (with temporary toilets in summer and autumn)" closest to Shinhotaka Onsen Station is so full during the season that it fills up the night before. The top parking lot on Nabedaira Plateau requires advance reservation and costs 600 yen every 6 hours. About 10 minutes walk down from that parking lot is the free "Nabedaira Climbers Parking Lot (with public toilets, closed in winter)", but it is a little far from Shinhotaka Onsen Station, and if you want to climb Yari-ga-take, Kasaga-take, or Sugoroku-dake, you will need to walk down the mountain for about 30 minutes to Shinhotaka Onsen Station. When climbing Mt. Nishihotakadake using the "Shinhotaka Ropeway", you can take the "Second Ropeway" directly from Nabehira Kogen Station, so you can save the fare for the "First Ropeway" from Shinhotaka Onsen Station.
