Over 2,600 years ago, the Buddha entered the holy city of Shravasti with his Sangha. Here, he was warmly welcomed by the people of Shravasti and the noble merchant Sudatta, better known as Anathapindika. One of the most holy sites of the Buddhist Circuit, Shravasti was where the Buddha spent 25 rainy retreats at the Jetavana Vihara. During these retreats, he and his disciples shared countless discourses on compassion, mindfulness, and the Noble Eightfold Path, sowing the seeds of Bodhichitta in the hearts of seekers across generations. Walking through its ancient stupas and monasteries — Jetavana Monastery, the sacred Anand Bodhi tree, Angulimala’s cave, Anathapindika Stupa, and Odajhar or Yamaka Pratihar Stupa — one still feels a deep connection to the Buddha’s wisdom. The fragrance of incense drifts through the ruins, while the gentle rustle of Bodhi leaves seems to carry echoes of the Buddha’s voice. As the Buddha once said: “Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” His words here even transformed the heart of Angulimala, once feared by all. If he could find peace in Shravasti, this sacred land reminds us that every heart holds the potential for awakening. Shravasti is not merely a place of miracles or meditation; it is a place of transformation, where the timeless message of truth and peace continues to prevail.
