In the 1960s, the Japanese government promoted this tropical island as the "Hawaii of Japan" to boost domestic tourism. It worked, and at the center of this tourism boom stood the grand Hachijō Royal Hotel. Built in 1963 by a wealthy businessman named Yasuda, this massive resort was Japan’s biggest hotel at the time, attracting elites, honeymooners, and even celebrities. With French Baroque architecture, marble staircases, and lavish fountains, no expense was spared… but the dream didn’t last. As international travel became easier in the 1990s, tourists chased real tropical destinations like Hawaii and Thailand. The hotel rebranded twice, but by 2006, it was abandoned entirely. Today, the jungle has taken over.
