I Try to Be POSITIVE...but I LOATHE This #1 Hit With EVERY FIBER of My BEING! | Professor of Rock

Coming up… It’s our final TIME IN BOTTLE COUNTDOWN for now. I’ve really enjoyed doing this series of songs that take us right back to the moment these song were on radio Today we are traveling back to a big year in the 70s with so many classic songs that will take you back including a song that was written after a member of a legendary band lost his beloved dog it was a sad song but it would end up causing a ruckus on the air when the most famous DJ in america flipped out in the middle of his famous show in a profanity laced rant when it was played during his most listened to segment. There is also the famous 17-minute overtly sensual song that came from its iconic singer having multiple AHEM peaks while recording it. It was banned pretty much everywhere, but still hit #1. We also have a rock band that had 15 hits and influenced every band that came after, but they’ve been erased from history for no good reason, plus the song that one of the greatest songwriters of all time got from his 3 year old song. He wrote it as a joke, and it became his biggest Hit… Let's do it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers David Roche, Bob Bell, Holly, W.T.F, James Dorsey, Bruce Suit ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to the Professor of Rock Podcast Apple: https://apple.co/445fVov Spotify: https://spoti.fi/42JpfvU Amazon: https://amzn.to/44b5D6m iHeartRadio: https://bit.ly/444h8MO ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Patreon: http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Merch Store: https://professor-of-rock-lsn-shop.fo... Well, we’ve had a nice run, but today is going to be our final episode of Time In a Bottle countdown. We’ve covered most of the 80s and 70s, give or take a few years. I’m going to retool the countdown and come back with something better. But it’s been an honor to do this as a tip of the hat to both Jim Croce and Casey Kasem. On this episode, we’re saving 11 songs in a Time Bottle for the year 1976. 50 years ago! Coming in at #10, it’s an irresistible ditty about groupies. It’s “Fox on the Run” by Sweet: Before “Fox on the Run” was released, Sweet’s managers were calling ALL the shots, steering their sound and writing most of their big hits. Feeling frustrated, the band decided enough was enough and took matters into their own hands. One weekend, when their management was not paying attention, they slipped into a studio and re-recorded “Fox on the Run” themselves, aiming for something that sounded more exciting. The boldest part of the band’s clandestine plan came from guitarist Andy Scott. While the rest of the guys stepped out for a couple of pints of beer, Scott stuck around and layered in a cutting-edge synthesizer section for the intro and the outro, totally shifting the whole vibe of the song: The band members of Sweet LOVED the pubs, and they hammered out the lyrics to “Fox on the Run” inside a pub located right next to the recording studio before the first take of the track for the Desolation Boulevard album. They swore they’d rewrite them later, but never did, so the song ends up with no traditional final verse, just the reprise of the chorus: “Foxy” is slang for an attractive person. The origin of the term goes back to the late 1500s when a writer complained about women wearing clothes that were so tight they had to hide “silver fox tails” down the back of the skirts to hide their backside. But it really became part of the American pop culture vernacular in the 70s, after the track “Foxey Lady” by Jimi Hendrix became popular. We’re saving “Fox on the Run” in our Time Bottle Dated 1976, because it is such a great feel-good rocker from that year. It went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and had a renaissance after it was used for for the trailer of the 2nd Guardians of the Galaxy movie: Truth is Sweet should’ve been one of the biggest bands of all time But one day Lead singer Brian Conolly was using a payphone and got jumped by a group of men and he was kicked in the throat which crushed his larynx and it permanently damaged his voice. For some reasons the band had been erased from history even though they had 15 hits. Coming in at #9 is the signature track for a renowned musician, but he ended up relinquishing the mic for an unknown singer to deliver the lead vocal. It’s “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” by Elvin Bishop.
