-----STATION INFO----- Getafe Centro, known as “Getafe - Badajoz” until 1981, is a railway station and transportation hub located in the Spanish municipality of Getafe. The station serves Madrid Metro Line 12, Madrid Cercanías Line C-4, and numerous urban and intercity bus lines. The different names for each of the two stations that make up the transit hub (replacing the noun “centro,” which was part of the name of the Cercanías station—the older of the two— with the adjective “central” for the Metro station’s name) reflects a naming convention adopted for the stations on Metro Line 12 that connect with the five Cercanías stations closest to the urban centers of the respective towns through which the line runs. The station is part of the Móstoles–Parla railway line, which uses the Iberian gauge, at kilometer marker 14.3. The original station was part of the Madrid–Ciudad Real line, built by the Ciudad Real to Badajoz and Almorchón to Bélmez Railway Company (CRB) and inaugurated in 1879. However, barely a year after its opening, the facilities were transferred to the MZA company, following its merger with the CRB. Initially named “Getafe - Directa” to distinguish it from the other station in the municipality, it was renamed “Getafe - Badajoz” in 1912. In 1941, with the nationalization of the Iberian-gauge railways, the facilities were transferred to the newly created RENFE. In 1981, the line was electrified and the station was integrated into the new Madrid Commuter Rail network, changing its name to “Getafe Central.” In 1988, the historic Madrid–Ciudad Real line was partially closed; since then, the station has been part of the Móstoles–Parla line. Until 1998, the old station building served only commuter rail services. That year, the section of track running through the town center of Getafe was moved underground, and the current station building was constructed. The Getafe Central Metro station opened to the public on April 11, 2003, when Metro Line 12—to which it belongs—was inaugurated. Since January 2005, Adif has been the owner of the railway facilities, while Renfe Operadora operates the line. Since July 6, 2014, the metro station has been closed due to improvement work on Line 12 between the Arroyo Culebro and Los Espartales stations. The purpose of this work was to restore and improve the existing conditions of the track bed through a series of consolidation measures, replacement of the track fastening system, waterproofing of the tunnel, and an increase in the capacity of the drainage system. These improvements will allow trains to double their speed when passing through this section, reaching speeds of over 70 km/h. Service was restored on September 8, 2014. This station is the most centrally located of the eight metro stations in Getafe. The transit hub is located at the intersection of Ferrocarril and Ramón y Cajal streets, both in the Centro neighborhood. It features a modern building with glass and wood facades, a semicircular floor plan, and a single-sloped roof. It features a concourse for the Cercanías commuter trains (on the upper level), another for the Metro (on the lower level), a café, and a newsstand (on the street level).
