Nasty Log, Pretty Wood - Big Red Maple
Rare for a red maple to get this big. They get a nice flaky bark like white oak, and can look similar. The poorly formed trunk, rot, and double heart are a tell tale sign in hindsight. Once I started milled, I heard how smooth the mill ran through it. Knew instantly it wasn't a rock hard white oak. Red maple can get a lot of graying in the heart wood, making it not very appealing for woodworking. I do like how soft it is, easy to work.
