WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS VIDEO: After watching this video, you will have an understanding of how cognitive multimedia theory developed, you will know the associated effective multimedia principles, and you will know how to apply them in your teaching practice to reduce your students' cognitive load and increase learning outcomes. SUMMARY: Cognitive multimedia theory builds on dual-coding theory and cognitive load theory. Cognitive multimedia theory combines these theories and, based on them, describes effective multimedia principles that can prevent working memory overload. This leads to more effective learning and improved learning outcomes. The effective multimedia principles are: coherence, signaling, redundancy, spatial contiguity, and temporal contiguity. I will discuss them one by one. The coherence principle: remove extraneous words, images, and sounds. The signaling principle: indicate what is most important for the student to know. The redundancy principle: remove redundant and duplicate information. The spatial contiguity principle: place essential words next to their corresponding images and make these captions unambiguous. And finally, the temporal contiguity principle: present the corresponding words and images simultaneously. By applying these techniques as a teacher in presentations, the digital learning environment, or printed materials, you can reduce your students' cognitive load and increase their learning outcomes!
