Mozart is AMAZING in French!
In this video I explore the Grave from Mozart’s unfinished Suite, K. 399, and show why this opening is so fascinating as a French overture. Mozart switches language and style with complete ease, absorbing the French idiom and turning it into something entirely his own. We look at pulse, timing, ornamentation, structure, and dramatic contrast: from the solemn opening and its theatrical rhetoric to the questions, echoes, intensifications, and tension that lead into the fugue. This is also music I have come to value far more deeply through the recording process. The more closely I look at it, the clearer it becomes that this is not a minor stylistic exercise, but top-level Mozart. The video ends with a full performance of the piece.
