Le Traumatisme Caché (et Vertigineux) d’Evangelion

Evangelion’s Hidden Trauma 新世紀エヴァンゲリオンの建築的思考 What place does Neon Genesis Evangelion hold in today’s pop culture? How important is it within Japanese animation? Is it perhaps the deepest anime in history? So many questions that make Hideaki Anno’s work a title apart, with its passionate fans, its critics, and in between an infinite number of people left behind... Evangelion is, de facto, a significant and complex work, as much because of its strengths as its flaws. It divides as much as it unites, fascinates as much as it exasperates, and thirty years after its creation, its message still sparks just as many questions. Spoil Alert: This video contains spoilers of key scenes from Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water as well as from the Evangelion series and films. This documentary was made after years of personal reflection on Hideaki Anno’s work, culminating in this essay built around the three axes of understanding the work as I develop them on the MacGuffin Maker channel: the story of its creation, its decoding, and an analysis of Evangelion. An, because there could be many. But that is not the mission of the channel; rather, it is about raising some questions, and more concretely inviting you to understand how the loss of direction in the work—and in Anno—actually represents its major theme. Flawed, yes, but one that tries to say surprisingly constructed things—perhaps even more so than the rest of the productions from its era. So I invite you to join me in this nearly hour-long dive into Hideaki Anno’s work, through this thoroughly documented and sourced video, made with the best quality possible. The MacGuffin Maker fundamentals are more present than ever here. __________________________ Chapters 00:00 Introduction 03:52 Hideaki Anno’s quote on the development of Evangelion 07:14 Part 1 – Once Upon a Time...
